Foundation of Mercy Children's Centre: A Beacon of Hope for Orphans in Kenya

WE ARE NON-PROFIT ORGANISATION

The Foundation of Mercy Children's Centre International stands as a powerful testament to what faith, compassion, and determination can achieve—even in the face of adversity. Founded by Rev. Henry Omreo Nyasemi, the organisation has its roots in a deeply personal journey of transformation and unwavering commitment to serving the most vulnerable.

In 1985, at just 23 years old, Henry experienced a profound shift in his life when he became a Christian. This decision, however, came at great personal cost. His father, a devout Muslim, strongly opposed his conversion and forced him to leave home. Alone but undeterred, Henry walked across the border from Tanzania to Kenya. There, he pursued theological education and graduated as a minister, driven by a vision of serving God and humanity.

That vision took shape in 1990 when Rev. Henry established a small church in Makara, a rural village north of Kisii Township. What began as a humble gathering of 15 believers in a local home soon grew into a thriving congregation of 150 people within three years. But the mission soon expanded far beyond the church walls.

In 1993, the Kisii region was gripped by a health crisis of tragic proportions. Tuberculosis, malaria, and HIV/AIDS swept through the community, making the region one of the hardest-hit areas in Kenya. The toll was devastating: out of a population of 15,000, one in five households had lost all adult guardians. Thousands of children were orphaned overnight, left to survive on their own while caring for younger siblings.

In response to this humanitarian crisis, the Foundation of Mercy Children’s Centre was born. With little more than faith and the support of a few compassionate individuals, Rev. Henry launched an initiative to care for these orphans— providing them with food, shelter, education, and the love of a surrogate family.

Over time, the foundation became a sanctuary for hope, transforming the lives of children who had once been abandoned by circumstance.

Today, the Foundation of Mercy Children's Centre continues to serve as a lifeline for countless children, offering more than just basic needs—it offers dignity, purpose, and a future.
